RoHS: RoHS definitions, issues, links
leadfree: major RoHS-contribution of electronic material such as semiconductors. Meaning mainly, solder pins are no more finished with lead containing tin. Such material can be used in leadfree soldering environment without contaminating this environment with lead. To ensure reliability and solderability of such material, solder temperature and profile need to be adjusted to higher temperatures. The semiconductor industry mainly has solved the resulting issues of mold compounds and pin finish and meanwhile offers leadfree material off the shelf. Are you prepared to the change? Manufacturers choose different methods to switch from lead containing to leadfree material. Some choose to just declare leadfree starting with a certain datecode or production lot. Some other choose to differenciate between lead containing and leadfree material by adding L (for leadfree) into the suffix of their part numbers, making the customers self responsible for making the change. This increases the workload at purchasing, incoming inspection, quality control and warehouse at the manufacturers of electronics products.
